The Market is a Great Guru — Vinod Sethi | The Long Game

When Vinod Sethi talks about markets, he uses words like guru, mirror, sadhana, madhouse, and divine force. After three decades of investing, he has come to see the market not as a game to be beaten, but as a teacher to be listened to.

In this conversation, which is the first episode of The Long Game podcast, Vinod reflects on what 30 years of Indian markets have taught him about pain, patience, and intention. He talks about why hard work has almost nothing to do with investing returns, why return on time matters more than return on money, how to read people rather than spreadsheets, what Warren Buffett did after 60, and why the age we live in is not an age of ignorance but an age of stupidity.

Vinod Sethi is one of India's most respected money managers. An IIT Bombay graduate with an MBA from NYU Stern, he was the India Head of Morgan Stanley Investment Management in the 1990s, where he helped define the playbook for long-term investing in India's emerging markets. Today he invests his own capital and mentors young investors.

This episode was recorded in August 2025. The Long Game is the evolution of The One Percent Show, the same conversations, growing into a name that better reflects what the show has always been trying to be: conversations with people who have stayed with something difficult for a long time.
The name of the show comes from a book by the same name, The Long Game, which features 30 investing practitioners reflecting on what patience, process, and long horizons have taught them. You can find the book here: https://www.safalniveshak.com/the-long-game/
