FRIEDRICH MERZ: Erster EU-Gipfel in Brüssel - Bundeskanzler Merz drängt auf Handelsabkommen mit USAMit Spannung wird heute der EU-Gipfel in Brüssel erwartet – es ist der erste für Bundeskanzler Friedrich Merz. Nur einen Tag nach dem NATO-Gipfel nimmt der Kanzler erstmals am Europäischen Rat teil und betont zum Auftakt seine Unterstützung für die EU-Kommission unter Ursula von der Leyen. Im Zentrum stehen wirtschaftspolitische Themen und geopolitische Weichenstellungen für die kommenden Monate.
Merz kündigte an, die Bemühungen um die Wettbewerbsfähigkeit der europäischen Industrie nachdrücklich zu unterstützen. Er sprach sich klar für den Abschluss eines Handelsabkommens mit den USA sowie für eine Wiederaufnahme der Verhandlungen über das Mercosur-Abkommen aus. Europa müsse seine wirtschaftliche Stärke behaupten und global handlungsfähig bleiben, so der Kanzler.
Der Gipfel gilt als erster europapolitischer Stimmungstest für die neue Bundesregierung. Merz kündigte an, sich persönlich einbringen zu wollen, um Europa gestärkt und geschlossen durch eine Phase globaler Umbrüche zu führen.
