The first time my phone offered to connect to a satellite, I thought we had finally figured it out. Internet from space. Everywhere.

No more dead zones, terrible airplane WiFi, or getting stranded somewhere without a signal.

Except… satellite internet has been around for decades. And for most of that time, it was painfully slow, ridiculously expensive, and nowhere near good enough to replace regular internet.

So what actually changed?

Caya went down the rabbit hole of satellite internet, starting with Boeing's failed attempt to bring broadband to airplanes in 2004, and ending with Starlink's thousands of satellites orbiting Earth today.

Along the way, we break down why old satellites had to sit 35,786 kilometers above Earth, how that distance made even basic internet painfully slow, and how SpaceX managed to build a completely different system much closer to the ground.

We also get into the technology that makes it all work: orbital mechanics, phased-array antennas, satellite handoffs, and lasers connecting satellites in space.

And finally, we test the big promise behind satellite 5G: connecting your regular phone directly to space, even when there's not a single cell tower nearby.

Because satellite internet might finally be good enough to change how we connect to the world.

But is it actually going to replace the internet we already have?
