His claim is that people register you for the first time when they encounter you for the eleventh. Before that you're background. Which means almost everyone quits during the invisible stretch and concludes the thing doesn't work.
That's the small, daily half of this talk. The other half is why it works now in a way it didn't two years ago.
Priestley argues the algorithms have quietly changed what they're doing. They've stopped chasing what's trending and started reading what your posts are actually about, then matching them to the people who need exactly that. Fewer views, better views. So every post you publish is closer to a phone call placed to a stranger who is ready to hear from you, and the number of posts you made last month is the number of calls you made last month.
He also has a theory about why your business might be struggling that involves cat food. There is no mouse-flavoured cat food, despite cats wanting it, because cats don't have credit cards. Most people, he reckons, are selling to the cat.
And near the end he tells the story of being so convinced his first Diary of a CEO episode would flop that he thought the only mercy would be nobody watching it. The two entrepreneurship episodes before his had underperformed, and those guests ran Spotify and Airbnb. His did six times their numbers. The four-word explanation Steven Bartlett gave him is the part of this talk people remember.
Recorded live at Mindvalley U.
