Is Indian Food Better in Pakistan? 🇵🇰
Indian food is available in Pakistan, despite the complicated relationship between the two countries. So while travelling in Karachi, I decided to put it to the test.I headed to Mirchili Restaurant in Karachi, a Pakistani chain with branches around the city serving chaat and, at some locations, dosa. At this particular branch inside a shopping mall, I tried two classic Indian snacks: Bhel Puri and Raj Kachori, which Mirchili calls Khas Gappa Ghotala on its menu.
Having travelled all around India and eaten food in every Indian state, I have a pretty good idea of what these dishes are supposed to taste like. So how does Indian food made in Pakistan compare with the real thing in India?
The Bhel Puri was… interesting. The presentation was very different from what I'm used to in India, and it was loaded with chilli. But despite how it looked, it actually tasted much better than I expected.
The real surprise was the Raj Kachori. The flavours were remarkably close to the version I regularly eat in Delhi. I’d say Mirchili's Raj Kachori was about 90% there. There are a few things they could improve, particularly the yoghurt, tamarind chutney and masala profile, but I was genuinely surprised by how good it was.
And tell me in the comments: What is your favourite Indian dish?
I tried dosa in Pakistan too, it's... different. See what I mean: https://youtu.be/_le9fDtphWs
