Tra le varie teorie su origini eroiche, Virgilio scelse di far discendere i romani da Enea, l’eroe più pietoso della tradizione.Enea non è un vincitore tradizionale: lascia Troia in fiamme, perde la guerra, non è mai padrone del suo destino. Deve abbandonare la moglie Creusa, soffrire la perdita di Didone e seguire la missione che lo porterà a sposare una principessa italica, in prospettiva fondando Roma. La sua grandezza non sta nella forza o nell’astuzia, ma nella lealtà, nella responsabilità e nella devozione verso la Patria, la famiglia e le generazioni future.La pietas di Enea diventa così il fondamento del sentimento romano, un valore che i cristiani riconosceranno in sé stessi nei secoli successivi. Proprio per questo Dante sceglierà Virgilio come guida nel suo viaggio nell’aldilà, simbolo di sapienza, virtù e dedizione morale.
