Kendati demikian, Nadiem dinilai tak memahami birokrasi dan pemerintahan.
Menurut Mahfud, salah satu tanda Nadiem tak kenal birokrasi ialah jarang berkantor padahal menjadi seorang menteri.
Dilansir dari Kompas.com, Rabu (10/9/2025), pernyataan itu disampaikan Mahfud MD melalui YouTube pribadinya.
"Menurut saya, Nadiem itu adalah orang yang bersih. Bersih, tetapi tidak paham birokrasi dan pemerintahan," ucap Mahfud dalam acara podcast Terus Terang di kanal Mahfud MD Official, dikutip Rabu (10/9/2025).
Lanjut Mahfud menceritakan, ada seorang petinggi yang ingin bertemu Nadiem, namun eks Mendikbudristek itu tak pernah berada di kantor.
Sehingga saat itu mereka justru bertemu di hotel.
"Karena konon dia enggak ngantor di kantornya, ditemuinya di hotel," tutur Mahfud.
Mahfud menyatakan, Nadiem berpikir mengelola kementerian yang dia pimpin dengan cara taktis, yakni seperti mengatur bisnis yang pernah dijalankan sebelumnya.
Menurut Mahfud, Nadiem juga pernah dicecar forum rektor seluruh Indonesia.
Hal itu dikarenakan ia tak pernah memberikan arahan dan kebijakan.
"Tahu nggak yang muncul di situ? Protes rektor. 'Saya Alhamdulillah menteri (Mahfud MD) bisa menegur kami, selama ini kami nggak pernah (mendapat arahan)' (kata) Rektor Universitas Diponegoro," ucap Mahfud.
Lantas, saat itu Mahfud MD yang masih menjabat sebagai menteri menegur secara langsung ke Nadiem bahwa arahan terkait dengan perguruan tinggi adalah tugasnya, bukan tugas Menkopolhukam.
Adapun Mahfud turut mengkritik kebijakan era eks Mendikbudristek, Nadiem soal pengadaan Chromebook yang kini menjadi kasus dugaan korupsi.
Menurut Mahfud, yang lebih penting ialah fasilitas dasar di dunia pendidikan.
Mengingat, ada beberapa daerah yang anak-anaknya harus menyeberang bertaruh nyawa dengan jembatan tali untuk mencapai sekolah.
