Armored Warriors - No Death Clear (Fordy/Siren)

Armored Warriors (aka Powered Gear) is a mecha beat 'em up from Capcom, originally released in 1994. The main gimmick of this game is your ability to find new parts for your mech and immediately swap them out. You can find new parts for your arms, which changes your primary attack, legs, which can change your mobility and your dash/jump attacks, and there are a bunch of different ranged weapons, like missiles, guns, a laser, or a flamethrower.
The balancing isn't great, with some weapons that are clearly strong or weak, but being able to modify your character and change your playstyle on the fly is a pretty cool feature that perfectly suits a mecha game. If you play with other people, you can even combine your mechs and form one giant machine to steamroll a boss. All you need to do is pick up the radio item and enter a hidden command. Unfortunately, this feature isn't available in single player. I don't know why they couldn't just have two of the other characters come in like assists, but whatever...

There is another hidden command that lets you change weapons between stages. You just hold down B+C+any direction. Each weapon is tied to a different direction, but the only ones I use are down-left for the flamethrower, down-right for the laser, and sometimes I'll use left for the plasma sword in stage 2. Otherwise you may have to use the drill, which is fine, it just seems to take a little longer to kill the boss with.

This is one of my favorite Capcom games, but as their beat em ups got more complex, it became easier for strong and boring strategies to slip through that let you ruin the game for yourself. So how fun it is is really up to you (You Control the Buttons You Press). Although, the only big offender here are the hover legs, which let you jump into the air and shoot missiles at the enemies below you as you hover back down. It's lame and easy to abuse, but everything else is fun to play with.

This game isn't too hard to clear. Most of the difficulty comes from how much damage enemies can do to you. Even one punch from the lowest level enemy can do 30% damage. Some enemies have attacks that'll take out 50 to 75% of your health, so you have to be careful with them. The one caveat is that, generally, you won't die when your HP reaches zero. You'll be able to take one more hit afterward, so even picking up a small healing item can be a lifesaver. However, some enemies have really powerful attacks that blast right through your 0 HP safety net and kill you instantly, so again, you have to be careful around them. You only get one spare life by default too, so resources are kinda scarce.

But with all that said, I love this game. It's one of my favorite beat em ups, and one of my favorite Capcom games. I don't think it was too popular, since Capcom tried to recycle a bunch of the assets with their Cyberbots fighting game, but Armored Warriors is the real main event. I'm playing it in the Capcom Beat 'em Up Collection for this video, but this is also available in Capcom Arcade Stadium. I don't know which one is better, but I'm sure you can't go wrong either way. Both collections are an incredible value regardless, especially if get them on sale. Check it out!
I'm also playing the English version so I can include all of the story scenes. I generally stick to the original Japanese versions of arcade games, because the overseas releases tend to be altered and screwed up in some way, but I'm not aware of any significant differences with this game. I haven't really investigated it, though... Capcom can be sneaky sometimes (eg. Final Fight)

P.S. This will be my last video for a few weeks, since I'm heading to Japan for vacation in a couple days. When I get back, I really want to start Ninja Gaiden 4 or Bayonetta 3 videos as my main project, but I can't say for certain.
