Hanif menyebut bahwa PT GAG Nikel sudah relatif memenuhi kaidah tata lingkungan.
Hal tersebut disampaikan Menteri Hanif dalam konferensi pers tentang peninjauan tambang Raja Ampat di Hotel Pullman, Jakarta Pusat pada Minggu (8/6).
Dikatakan olehnya bahwa jika ada tanda ketidakpatuhan terhadap kaidah tata lingkungan, sifatnya hanya minor.
Meski begitu, Hanif mengatakan bahwa hal tersebut masih perlu kajian mendalam karena sedimentasi yang ditimbulkan akibat tambang sudah menutupi terumbu karang.
Hanif pun tak memungkiri bahwa ekosistem terumbu karang sangat penting bagi kehidupan sehingga harus dijaga.
Dalam kesempatan yang sama, Hanif juga mengungkapkan bahwa PT GAG Nikel dan 12 perusahaan lainnya telah diberikan hak khusus untuk melakukan aktivitas tambang di Kabupaten Raja Ampat.
Berdasarkan UU Nomor 41 tahun 1999 tentang Kehutanan, penambangan dengan metode terbuka dilarang di kawasan hutan lindung.
Namun, 13 perusahaan tersebut diberikan pengecualian berdasarkan UU nomor 19 tahun 2004 yang mengatur penetapan Perppu Nomor 1 Tahun 2004.
Perusahaan-perusahaan itu disebut telah memenuhi persyaratan perizinan yang berlaku.
