Interestingly, the 1997-98 season was a pivotal moment when it came to NBA apparel licensing. Whereas Champion had been the exclusive NBA outfitter for the entirely of the '90s up to that point, 1997 brought about a deal in which the license was splintered between three entities: Champion, Starter, and Nike, with each brand splitting team representation as follows:Champion: Atlanta, Indiana, LA Clippers, New Jersey, Orlando, Philadelphia, Phoenix, Seattle, Utah & Vancouver
Nike: Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Detroit, LA Lakers, Miami, Portland, San Antonio, Toronto & Washington
Starter: Charlotte, Cleveland, Denver, Golden State, Houston, Milwaukee, Minnesota, New York & Sacramento
A variation of this tri-force arrangement held until 2004. By then, Reebok had taken over Champion and Starter's shares, the latter by way of Puma (Puma had acquired Starter's teams for two seasons beginning in 1999). When Nike's contract concluded following the Detroit Pistons' 2004 NBA championship, Reebok swooped in to snatch up the rest of the teams, becoming the NBA's exclusive outfitter in earnest.
