Boro Park Shomrim & NYPD Take Down Professional Theft Crew
On what seemed like an ordinary summer day, July 29, several business owners along 13th Avenue reached out to Boro Park Shomrim after realizing they had fallen victim to the same scam.Two individuals entered multiple stores looking to purchase expensive electronic items. When it came time to pay, they claimed they didn’t have cash and offered to send the money through Zelle.
Moments later, the store owners received what appeared to be payment confirmations by text message and email. Everything looked legitimate.
But it wasn’t.
The messages were fake, and the suspects walked away with the merchandise before anyone realized the money had never been sent.
As additional reports came in, Shomrim quickly recognized a pattern. A coordinated team was assembled, and investigators learned the suspects would be returning to pick up more merchandise.
Members positioned themselves throughout the area and kept the suspects under constant observation, carefully following their movements while coordinating in real time with the NYPD.
When the suspects arrived at the meeting location, NYPD units moved in to stop the vehicle.
Instead of surrendering, the suspects drove recklessly through the area, striking multiple vehicles as they fled the scene.
An immediate citywide alert was broadcast to Shomrim organizations across New York City, providing a description of the suspects and their vehicle.
A short time later, members of Crown Heights Shomrim spotted the vehicle and discreetly maintained visual contact while relaying updates to responding officers.
Working together, the NYPD’s 73rd Precinct Crime Team closed in on the suspects, with additional support from the NYPD Aviation Unit overhead.
The suspects eventually abandoned their vehicle in front of a fire hydrant and barricaded themselves inside an apartment building.
Officers established a perimeter, moved in safely, and took both suspects into custody without further incident.
This case is another example of what can be accomplished when neighborhood volunteers and law enforcement work side by side.
