El desempleo, la pobreza y la violencia marcan el día a día en el suburbio de Alexandra, en Johannesburgo. Las madres solteras viven en una lucha constante. Los primeros 1001 días tras el nacimiento son decisivos para el desarrollo de los niños.

Un grupo de mujeres originarias de Alexandra trabaja para cambiar el barrio mejorando el bienestar psicológico de las madres y sus bebés. El reportaje «1001 días» acompaña a tres de estas mujeres, Thandiwe, Khosi y Zanele, en sus visitas a domicilio a madres jóvenes, donde establecer una relación de confianza requiere mucha atención y sensibilidad. Se toman el tiempo necesario para mantener conversaciones íntimas y, a menudo, dolorosas.
