Zum Jahreswechsel stellt sich das Wetter in Deutschland zunehmend winterlich ein. In den kommenden Tagen dreht die Strömung auf Nord, wodurch polare Kaltluft einfließt und die Temperaturen spürbar sinken. Bereits heute bleibt es in München leicht frostig, während Köln bis zu 3 Grad und Berlin etwa 4 Grad erreichen. An den Küsten sind mit 5 bis 7 Grad noch die mildesten Werte möglich. Insgesamt dominiert graues Wetter, regional mit Regen, vor allem von Niedersachsen bis zur Oder. Im Süden ist es mit minus 2 bis plus 2 Grad deutlich kälter, dort hält sich gebietsweise zäher Nebel, während es in den Bergen und an den Alpen sonnig und mit bis zu 9 Grad vergleichsweise mild bleibt. Ab Mittwoch wird das Wetter wechselhafter, mit Regen im Westen und Schnee im Osten und Süden. Zum Start ins neue Jahr nehmen die Temperaturgegensätze zu. Für Freitag zeichnet sich die Bildung einer Luftmassengrenze ab, an der es lokal zu kräftigen Schneefällen kommen kann. Wo diese genau verlaufen wird, ist noch unsicher.
