Nepal has made a major diplomatic demand after the devastating Bhotekoshi River flash floods, calling for climate compensation instead of traditional disaster aid. Nepal’s Foreign Minister Shisir Khanal has argued that the country contributes very little to global greenhouse gas emissions but is facing severe consequences from climate change, including glacier melt and extreme Himalayan disasters.
In this video, we explain why Nepal has named India, China and the United States, what “climate compensation” and climate justice actually mean, and whether major greenhouse-gas emitters can legally or morally be held responsible for climate-related losses.
The video also explains the Bhotekoshi flash flood, the role of Himalayan glaciers and the cryosphere, the growing threat of glacial and mountain disasters, and Nepal’s request for urgent assistance from the Fund for Responding to Loss and Damage, a climate-finance mechanism established through the UN climate process.
We also examine India’s position on climate equity, historical emissions and per-capita emissions, why developing countries have demanded greater climate finance from developed nations, and how this issue could become an important subject at upcoming international climate and UN forums.
With Nepal’s flood disaster killing more than 1,000 people and leaving thousands missing, the incident has transformed from a humanitarian catastrophe into a major climate diplomacy and geopolitical debate in South Asia.
