Kings and Generals animated historical documentary series on modern warfare and the Great War continues with a video on the battle of the Falkland Islands in 1914. Previously we talked about the battle of Coronel preceding it (https://youtu.be/kWAiQrZ61gk). In this episode, we follow Vice Admiral Maximilian von Spee’s desperate attempt to break free from Entente pursuit in Von Spee’s Escape Across the Pacific. After a string of raids, he achieved a dramatic victory in The Battle of Coronel: British Disaster, sinking two British cruisers and shaking the Royal Navy’s prestige. In response, the Admiralty launched a massive counteroffensive in Britain Plans Revenge: Sturdee Mobilizes, dispatching powerful battlecruisers to the South Atlantic. Meanwhile, Von Spee’s Fatal Gamble at the Falklands saw him attempt to raid Port Stanley, unaware of the force awaiting him. The result was a catastrophic clash in Battle of the Falklands: Destruction of the Squadron, where Spee’s squadron was utterly annihilated. Finally, in Aftermath and Legacy of Von Spee, we explore how the battle ended German naval power in the Pacific and cemented Spee’s legacy.
