Previously, we have covered the American Revolution - the War of American Independence (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_5_jkn_ODCM&list=PLaBYW76inbX6qMQ2CfpU0TUTxW3-D00nU), the beginning (https://youtu.be/2mUdKi0L6XQ) and the ending of the of the Civil War (https://youtu.be/otJnVLgaq7k). In this third chapter of the War of 1812, the struggle for the Old Northwest reaches its decisive phase. After the disasters of 1812, the United States reorganizes its command, while Britain struggles to hold Upper Canada together with thin resources, fragile supply lines, and the indispensable support of Tecumseh and his confederacy. The campaign opens with the fighting at Frenchtown and the catastrophe at the River Raisin, where American hopes of a quick recovery are shattered and the cry of “Remember the Raisin!” is born.
From there, the war shifts to the waters of Lake Erie, where shipyards, logistics, and naval leadership become just as important as battlefield courage. Oliver Hazard Perry’s improvised squadron challenges the British for control of the lake in one of the most important naval battles of the war. That victory cuts British communications, forces Proctor into retreat, and gives William Henry Harrison the opportunity he has been waiting for.
The campaign ends at the Battle of the Thames, where Tecumseh makes his final stand and his death destroys the dream of a united Native confederacy in the Northwest. This is the story of how Michigan was reclaimed and the Northwest campaign was decided.
