Nel 1534, con l’elezione di Alessandro Farnese a Papa Paolo III, la Chiesa Cattolica istituisce l’Inquisizione romana, nota anche come Santo Ufficio. Questo tribunale speciale aveva il compito di vigilare sulla fede, controllare la stampa, stabilire quali libri potevano essere pubblicati e reprimere le eresie, diventando uno degli strumenti più temuti della Chiesa.L’Inquisizione era guidata da un collegio di cardinali presieduto dal Papa, con teologi, funzionari e il commissario domenicano a garantire l’ortodossia.
