Pembicaraan soal etanol mencuat setelah sejumlah pihak SPBU swasta membatalkan pembelian Base Fuel (bahan bakar mentah/dasar) dari Pertamina. Alasannya, base fuel tersebut sudah mengandung etanol 3,5%.
Di sisi lain, etanol disebut sebagai bahan campuran yang mampu mendongkrak oktan (RON) BBM, dan ramah lingkungan.
Tapi, peningkatan produksi etanol berarti akan ada perluasan lahan perkebunan tebu atau tanaman sejenis, yang menjadi bahan baku bioetanol.
Pegiat lingkungan khawatir peningkatan produksi itu bisa semakin melanggengkan deforestasi dan menyebabkan konflik masyarakat adat.
