Ah yeah, we’re talking about Final Fantasy 7. If there’s one game that comes to mind when we think of RPGs, it’s most likely this one, and it’s for good reason, too. Sure, the Final Fantasy name had already cemented itself in the gaming zeitgeist for years at this point, but Final Fantasy 7 specifically would mark a massive change for both the franchise and the entire gaming industry going forward. In a lot of ways, this game is bigger than the Final Fantasy brand itself. So far, it’s the only one to get this much love with plenty of ports, spinoffs, and, most recently, remakes. Yeah, remakes as in plural, but we’ll get to that one eventually, don’t worry. However, for today, I want to focus on the classic PS1 version of FF7, analyze what it got right, what didn’t make the transition, and, most importantly, answer the burning question of how Final Fantasy 7… took over the world.
Deep within the planet, there exists the lifestream, a spiritual energy that’s made up of the knowledge, memories, and souls of all living beings in the world. The lifestream acts as the blood of the planet. When we eventually die, our spirits are returned to the planet and are then recycled back into the lifestream, creating a never-ending cycle of life, death, and reincarnation. However, the lifestream is also a source of immense power, one that mankind can’t help but yearn for. In our never-ending quest for human advancement, the electric power company known as Shinra discovered a way to harness the power of the Lifestream and convert it into a resource we know as mako energy. Think of it like a supercharged version of electricity. With the power of Mako at their disposal, Shinra was able to quickly gain a monopoly and rise the ranks of society before eventually sitting comfortably on top. Well, not that it would be difficult for them to do that anyway, since, believe it or not, this company has their own private army. Not only that, but by injecting a select few individuals with mako energy, they’ll be transformed into super soldiers. Simply known as SOLDIER, these people have incredible strength and agility; oftentimes being trusted with carrying out some of the most important missions for the company, with the most legendary of which being a man named sephiroth but we’ll get to him later.
How Final Fantasy VII Changed the World. Depending on who you ask, Final Fantasy VII is either one of the greatest Final Fantasy games that Square Enix has ever produced. Or they'll say that Final Fantasy VII is an outdated and overrated game. To me, Final Fantasy VII has always represented one of the best eras in the PlayStation generation of gaming. Without Final Fantasy VII, we wouldn't get the popular sequels like Final Fantasy IX and Final Fantasy X. One could even argue that without Final Fantasy VII, the entire gaming landscape would be in a completely different position. Before Final Fantasy VII, RPG's were niche. However, thanks to the breakout worldwide success of Final Fantasy VII, Final Fantasy, and the entire genre, became widely recognized and respected. In this Final Fantasy VII Analysis, I'll be giving an in-depth and spoiler-filled examination of Final Fantasy VII. This video will not be covering the Final Fantasy VII Remake or Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. Those will get their own videos in the future! This Final Fantasy VII Critique was written and recorded before the reveal of Final Fantasy VII Remake part 3 and is the latest installment in my Final Fantasy Retrospective.
