💈 I Trusted This 2nd-Generation Barber With My Traditional Japanese Shave 🇯🇵

This was our first time traveling to Kyushu 🇯🇵✨🌸

We stopped in Himeji, a short ride from Osaka/Kyoto, to visit second-generation barber, Mr. Nakama who has been barbering for over 35 years 💈 His parents still work at the shop that his father opened in 1969. Since they live above the barbershop, Mr. Nakama sees them every day 🏡

Mr. Nakama was born and raised in Himeji. The life advice his parents gave him? Don't cause trouble for others, and always express your thanks to the people who have helped you.

When he was 18, he went to barber school in Tokyo where he stayed to train and work for 10 years. He remembers he didn't want a normal office job so he was inspired by his father to become a barber 💈 If he had to do it all over again, he would still choose a career where he could create with his hands. He says he would be a barber again.

One of the things that makes Mr. Nakama happiest is when he succeeds in giving a customer a hairstyle that really looks good on them 💇🏻‍♂️🎩 He does ask, “How would you like it today?” but often the response is, “All up to you.”

He’s really happy now that his customers no longer feel the need to give him instructions. Instead, they allow him to do what he thinks is best for them because they’ve come to trust him❣️

When customers sit in his chair, he wants them to relax and not have to think about anything.

When he’s not working, Mr. Nakama enjoys photography 📸 The subjects he likes the most to photograph? Trains, landscapes, and people. When he was in school, he used to be in the photography club and back then developed all his film 🎞️

✨ The advice he would give to his younger self? “Be more adventurous!” ✨

It was awesome to return to Japan and visit some of the shops we weren’t able to get to a few years ago! ▶️ If you missed any of our previous videos from Japan, check out this playlist👇🏼
