U.S. Steel plant explosion: Second worker now confirmed dead, 5 remain in critical condition
Two people are now confirmed dead after an explosion at a U.S. Steel plant in Pennsylvania on Monday. Ten people sustained injuries and 5 remain in critical condition, officials said during a press conference. The investigation is ongoing and the extent of the damage is unknown. At least one worker was able to be rescued and pulled from the wreckage hours after the explosion.Pennsylvania’s Governor, Josh Shapiro, previously said his administration has been in contact with local officials on the ground following the explosion.
"Injured employees have now been transported to local hospitals to receive care, and search-and-rescue efforts remain active at the plant," Shapiro said in social media earlier in the day. "If you’re in the area, continue to follow the instructions of local authorities. Lori and I are eternally thankful for the bravery of our first responders — and we continue to pray for the entire Clairton community."
U.S. Senator John Fetterman of Pennsylvania also released a statement earlier in the day. He said, "My team and I are tracking this explosion and waiting for more information. For those in the area, please listen to local officials and avoid the area. Keeping those injured and all who are impacted in my thoughts right now."
This Pennsylvania steel plant is a large facility that sits along the Monongahela River south of Pittsburgh. The industrial facility is considered the largest coking operation in North America.
