Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar was a brilliant Indian scientist who changed the way we understand stars, and his work quietly became one of the foundations of black hole science. He was born in Lahore in 1910 into a family that valued education, and his own uncle was the famous physicist C. V. Raman, who won a Nobel Prize before him. From a very young age, Chandrasekhar was drawn to physics and mathematics, and he kept asking a question that most people never think about: what actually happens to a star after it burns through all its fuel and dies? This simple childhood curiosity slowly grew into one of the most important discoveries in the history of astronomy.

At just nineteen years old, while sailing on a long ship voyage from India to England to begin his studies at Cambridge, Chandrasekhar worked through the physics of dying stars using nothing but pen, paper, and his own mind. He showed that a star's fate after death depends heavily on how much mass it has. If a star is light enough, it can settle down peacefully as a small, extremely dense object called a white dwarf, supported forever by the pressure of tightly packed electrons. But if the star's mass is higher than a certain limit, that pressure is no longer strong enough to fight against gravity, and the star cannot stop collapsing. This critical mass value is now called the Chandrasekhar Limit, and it equals about one point four times the mass of our Sun. It looks like a simple number on paper, but it completely changed how scientists thought about the death of stars.

This idea was not accepted easily at first. Many senior scientists of that era, including the highly respected astronomer Sir Arthur Eddington, publicly rejected his theory and even mocked it in front of other leading scientists at a major meeting. It was a deeply painful moment for a young researcher who had done the math correctly, but Chandrasekhar refused to give up on his own work. Years later, science fully proved him right. His limit explained why some stars fade away quietly as white dwarfs, while others end their lives in a violent collapse. That collapse can crush a star into a neutron star, and if the original star was massive enough, the collapse does not stop there at all. Gravity keeps pulling everything inward without end, until the star becomes a black hole, a region where gravity is so extreme that not even light can escape from it. Chandrasekhar spent much of his later career studying exactly this kind of extreme gravity, and he even wrote a detailed scientific book on the mathematics of black holes, becoming one of the pioneers who helped the world understand these strange objects.

Decades after he was mocked for his idea, in 1983, Chandrasekhar finally received the Nobel Prize in Physics for this very work, getting the recognition that had been unfairly denied to him as a young man. Today, the Chandrasekhar Limit is taught in nearly every astrophysics classroom on Earth, and it remains one of the most important numbers we know about the universe. It marks the exact boundary between a peaceful stellar death and the birth of one of the most extreme and mysterious objects in existence. In this video, we explore Chandrasekhar's life, his struggles, his quiet confidence in his own calculations, and how one young man's idea on a long sea voyage became a key foundation stone of black hole science as we understand it today. Chandrasekhar also spent decades teaching at the University of Chicago, where he trained many students who went on to become well known scientists themselves in their own right.
