Sudan: Rainy season worsens displacement crisis in Blue Nile as conflict spreads
The arrival of the rainy season in Sudan’s Blue Nile region is worsening already dire conditions for thousands of displaced people living in camps such as Elcarama in the city of Damazine.Families who have fled renewed fighting between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces say they are facing severe shortages of clean water, food, and shelter. Many of those arriving in recent weeks have escaped escalating violence in southern parts of Blue Nile State.
The United Nations says more than 50,000 people were displaced between April and May alone, with numbers continuing to rise as the conflict spreads. While some are staying in overcrowded camps, others remain in makeshift shelters or are exposed to the elements.
Aid agencies warn that the rainy season increases the risk of flooding and waterborne diseases, further deepening what has already been described as one of the world’s worst displacement crises. Humanitarian conditions are expected to deteriorate further if fighting continues.
