Washington – Neue Waffen-Allianz mit Washington! Verteidigungsminister Boris Pistorius (66, SPD) und sein US-Amtskollege Pete Hegseth (46) haben in Washington eine Absichtserklärung für eine deutlich engere Zusammenarbeit bei Rüstungsprojekten unterzeichnet. Deutschland und die USA wollen ihre Verteidigungsindustrien künftig noch stärker verzahnen.Konkret geht es um die Entwicklung, Produktion, Lizenzfertigung und Instandhaltung von Rüstungsgütern. Das Ziel: mehr Waffen, schneller produziert und mit sicheren Lieferketten. Pistorius verwies auf die bereits laufende Zusammenarbeit beim US-Tarnkappenjet F-35 und die geplante Fertigung von Lenkflugkörpern für das Luftverteidigungssystem Patriot in Deutschland.
„Doch unser gemeinsames Potenzial reicht weiter“, sagte der Minister. Deutschland verfüge über eine leistungsfähige industrielle Basis und technologische Spitzenkompetenz.
Wenn Deutschland und die USA ihre jeweiligen Stärken noch enger zusammenführten, könnten Systeme für Abschreckung und Verteidigung „schneller und in größerer Zahl“ bereitgestellt werden, so Pistorius. Auch beim geplanten Kauf von Tomahawk-Marschflugkörpern ist man sich bereits seit dem Nato-Gipfel im Juli grundsätzlich einig.
Der Deal kommt zu einem Zeitpunkt, an dem sich die Tonlage der US-Regierung gegenüber Deutschland deutlich gewandelt hat. US-Präsident Donald Trump (80) hatte Deutschland und andere europäische Nato-Staaten lange dafür kritisiert, zu wenig für die eigene Verteidigung zu tun. Inzwischen gibt es Lob aus Washington: US-Staatssekretär Elbridge Colby (46) bezeichnete Deutschland im August als Modell für andere Verbündete. Was Deutschland in den vergangenen 18 Monaten angestoßen habe, sei eine „außergewöhnliche tektonische Verschiebung“, sagte Colby.
Für Pistorius geht es nach Washington weiter nach New York. Am Freitag besucht er im texanischen Fort Worth den US-Konzern Lockheed Martin. Dort wird der erste von Deutschland bestellte F-35-Kampfjet offiziell übergeben. Deutschland hat insgesamt 35 Maschinen bestellt. Sie sollen die alternde Tornado-Flotte ersetzen.
