Kebijakan ini muncul setelah meningkatnya ketegangan dengan Thailand, terutama di wilayah perbatasan.
Seperti yang kita ketahui konflik bersenjata pada 28 Mei lalu menyebabkan satu tentara Kamboja tewas.
Ketegangan terus berlangsung meski upaya diplomasi dilakukan oleh kedua negara.
Di Thailand, komentar kontroversial soal militer membuat PM Paetongtarn Shinawatra diberhentikan.
Dalam pidatonya, Hun Manet menyebut wajib militer akan memperkuat pertahanan nasional.
Ia juga menilai tentara hasil wajib militer lebih efektif daripada pasukan sukarela.
Meski sudah disahkan sejak 2006, aturan wajib militer Kamboja belum pernah diaktifkan.
Warga berusia 18–30 tahun akan diwajibkan ikut dinas, perempuan tetap bersifat sukarela.
Hun Manet juga mendesak Thailand membuka semua perlintasan perbatasan tanpa syarat.
