India’s economy has achieved a major milestone after the Japan Credit Rating Agency (JCRA) upgraded India’s sovereign credit rating from BBB+ to A-, bringing India back into the A-rated club after more than 35 years.
In this video, we explain India’s sovereign credit rating upgrade, why JCRA upgraded India, what an A- rating means, and how this could impact India’s economy, global investors, borrowing costs and financial institutions.
The upgrade comes amid strong economic fundamentals, including India’s high GDP growth, improving fiscal position, stronger banking sector, declining non-performing loans, digital public infrastructure, robust domestic consumption and relatively low external vulnerability. India recorded 7.8% GDP growth in Q1 FY27, while the banking sector’s asset quality and fiscal indicators have also improved.
The video also looks at India’s sovereign rating history, including the fact that India last had an A-level rating in 1988 before the 1990–91 balance-of-payments crisis. It explains how India moved from the rating levels associated with the crisis back toward investment grade and why the latest JCRA upgrade is being viewed as a significant milestone.
We also examine the difference between JCRA, S&P, Moody’s and Fitch ratings, including why S&P has already upgraded India to BBB while Moody’s and Fitch remain at lower investment-grade levels. The key question is whether India’s improving growth, fiscal consolidation, stronger banking system and lower external vulnerability will eventually convince the remaining major global rating agencies to upgrade India further.
