'Empty Nests Everywhere': Climate Change Sends Antarctic Penguins Into Freefall | Planet Pulse

Watch this video as Firstpost explains how one of the world’s largest penguin colonies on Antarctica’s remote Zavodovski Island is facing a dramatic collapse, with occupied chinstrap penguin nests falling by 63% between 2011 and 2025. Once home to around 550,000 chinstrap penguins, the island now has just over 200,000, with researchers finding vast stretches of empty nests. Scientists link the decline to rapidly warming waters in the Southern Ocean, which are pushing krill, the penguins’ main food source during breeding season, further south and away from their traditional feeding grounds. While chinstrap numbers plunge, macaroni penguins on the same island have fared better, highlighting a major shift in Antarctica’s wildlife. Researchers warn that more than 95% of their population scenarios could place chinstrap penguins in the endangered category, although the species has not yet been officially reclassified. With the South Sandwich Islands home to around 30% of the world’s chinstrap penguins, the findings raise fresh concerns about how climate change is reshaping even the planet’s most remote ecosystems. Gursshheen Gahllen brings you more on Planet Pulse.
