Why do movies change aspect ratio?

If you saw The Dark Knight in an IMAX theater, you may have noticed the film would switch aspect ratios — big action set pieces filled the screen from top to bottom, while dialogue scenes shrank back down to a more standard widescreen shape. Switching for spectacle wasn't new even then. Paramount tried something similar in the 1920s with Old Ironsides, using a process called Magnascope: the projectionist switched to a shorter, wider lens for certain sequences, and stagehands expanded the screen masking to match. Changing the size and shape of the image mid-film has been around for a century. The real question is whether it's worth it. Immersion is a key part of the film experience — for two hours you can be whisked away to a different reality, and the moment you realize you're watching a movie, the illusion breaks. But that break can also happen covertly, so the audience gets the benefit of the switch without the disruptive transition. The useful way to think about which switches work: some are driven by the format — the cameras, the theater, the technology — and those tend to pull us out of the movie. Others are driven by the story, and those can pull us deeper in.

Spectacle & style

The most obvious reason to change aspect ratios is to elevate spectacle or style. In Nolan's films, the switch is usually shaped by the format — the frame opens up for action, where the IMAX cameras could work, and closes back down for dialogue, where they couldn't. Films like Scott Pilgrim vs. The World widen for key fight moments, helping the film shift from grounded comedy to a more stylistic, cinematic reality. Most of Damien Chazelle's First Man is shown in 2.39, but in IMAX theaters it opens up to the full 1.43 frame for the moon sequences. Here the switch isn't just about spectacle — Chazelle and cinematographer Linus Sandgren shot the cramped capsule interiors on grainy 16mm, so when the hatch finally opens onto the moon, the frame opens with it. It's the same choice with the same sense of awe, but in one case the switch follows the camera, and in the other it follows the character.
