The US Space Force has confirmed that the United States has weapons deployed in orbit, marking a major development in the militarisation and weaponisation of space. US officials say these on-orbit space control weapons are capable of defending American forces against hostile adversary action, but have not revealed exactly what weapons are currently deployed.

So, what are space control weapons? The US Space Force describes space control as missions designed to contest and control the space domain using both kinetic and non-kinetic capabilities, for offensive as well as defensive purposes. Analysts have discussed possibilities ranging from electronic warfare and jamming to other counterspace capabilities, although the exact US systems remain undisclosed.

The development comes amid growing US-China-Russia competition in space. China is rapidly expanding its military and counterspace capabilities, while Russia has also developed capabilities designed to threaten satellites and other space assets.

The video also explains the Outer Space Treaty of 1967, which prohibits placing nuclear weapons and other weapons of mass destruction in orbit, while not creating a blanket ban on every form of conventional military capability in space.

With satellites increasingly critical for military communications, navigation, surveillance, intelligence and precision warfare, the US announcement raises a bigger question: Is space becoming the next major battlefield?

Watch the video to understand US space weapons, Space Force, space warfare, counterspace weapons, anti-satellite weapons, US-China rivalry, US-Russia tensions, space militarisation and the future of warfare beyond Earth.
