Hong Kong: Has the National Security Law completely crushed pro-democracy dissent? | DW News
Citizens of Hong Kong used to rally for democracy every July 1. The so-called National Security Law has kept the streets quiet for the last five years. Over 350 pro-democracy activists and political figures, accused of subversion and encouraging secession were arrested under the law. The city enjoyed substantial autonomy from Beijing before the law was implemented. On the eve of the fifth anniversary of the National Security Law — just one day before July 1 — Hong Kong's last active pro-democracy group, the League of Social Democrats, announced its disbandment. It is the third major opposition party to disband in two years and said it had faced "intense pressure."
Is Hong Kong now just another Chinese territory, or does it still deserve its "Special Administrative Region designation"?
