Sekelompok warga melakukan berbagai inisiatif untuk mengatasi persoalan sampah di Sumenep, Jawa Timur. Masalah sampah semakin serius karena terus bertambah setiap tahun, disebabkan oleh pergeseran kebiasaan dan pertumbuhan penduduk.Wahana Lingkungan Hidup Indonesia (Walhi) Jawa Timur mencatat, timbunan sampah di Kabupaten Sumenep pada 2024 sebanyak 364 ton per hari, atau sekitar 133.000 ton per tahun.
Padahal, tempat pembuangan akhir (TPA) Batuan hanya mampu menampung sampah sebanyak 38 ton per hari sepanjang 2024—atau sekitar 10 persen dari total sampah di Sumenep.
Tahun ini, kapasitas TPA Batuan naik sedikit menjadi 40 ton per hari, menurut Dinas Lingkungan Hidup setempat. Betapa pun, selama beberapa tahun belakangan, TPA satu-satunya di Kabupaten Sumenep itu sudah kelebihan kapasitas.
