But as police surrounded his home, Perez remained inside, still live streaming.

And because police were still dealing with a potentially dangerous situation, fire-rescue crews were initially ordered to wait outside.

Then, just after 11pm, the instruction changed.

Emergency crews entered the home. Perez was found alive, and immediately transported to the hospital.

But by then, what had happened inside the home was already spreading far beyond Miami.

News crews were at the scene filming and describing images from the glimpses they caught of the livestream.

Online, recordings of the livestream were already circulating showing Perez in a state of undress and holding a knife.
