Con 33 m de altura, el Coloso de Rodas se forjó a partir de las máquinas de asedio abandonadas por el invasor macedonio Demetrio Poliorcetes (305 a. C.), convirtiendo el bronce enemigo en un reluciente Helios que custodiaba el puerto. El escultor Cares de Lindos remachó placas de bronce sobre un núcleo de hierro y piedra, alzando al gigante mediante rampas de madera. Tras solo 66 años, un sismo en 226 a. C. lo derrumbó; sus ruinas asombraron a los viajeros hasta que se vendieron en 654 d. C. La misma palabra «coloso» — e incluso la Estatua de la Libertad de Nueva York — hallan su inspiración en este titán de bronce.
