Castlevania (NES) - No Death Clear

Castlevania was originally released on the NES in 1986, so it'll turn 40 years old this year. It's still a really fun game to revisit. A lot of console games from this era were still in that transitioning phase from arcades. They tend to have more arcade like design, with short lengths and a relatively high level of difficulty. The best of these games will just be fun forever.

Castlevania has been remade multiple times, and at least one of those remakes still stands as possibly the best game in the entire series, but the original holds up just fine on its own. The balance isn't great, and you truly need self imposed limitations to retain a lot of its difficulty (like no sub-weapons, since they obliterate most bosses, as you can see), but it's still fun to play regardless. After you beat it, the game continues looping with a higher level of difficulty. They put more enemies into each stage, but at some point, it feels like they ran out of time and just decided to put Medusa heads everywhere. I didn't practice it much, though. Maybe it'd be fun.

I played this via the Castlevania Anniversary Collection, and while you can regularly get it for just a few dollars, it's really not the best way to play this. You can't run the game in full screen unless you use a scanline and blur filter, which looks pretty bad, and even the raw, unfiltered image looks a little blurry. You only get one save slot, too, so practicing stages or specific levels would be a chore. I think playing on an emulator like Mesen is totally superior in every way, but I'd still toss them a few bucks for this collection. I guess the bonus material is nice to have, and you get a bunch of great games to play regardless. It's adequate.

I've been meaning to do deathless clears these games main for years and years now, so I want to carve out a bit of time in between my more time consuming goals. It's a fun break.
