In Italia, la corsa alle terre rare e alle materie prime strategiche non è solo una questione industriale: è una delle sfide geopolitiche più rilevanti del nostro tempo.
Il motivo? La Cina, che detiene circa il 70% delle riserve mondiali di questi materiali, sta chiudendo i rubinetti. “Chi le vuole, deve pagarle care”, è il messaggio non detto di Pechino. E non è finita: la Repubblica Popolare produce oggi il 90% dei magneti a base di terre rare a livello globale, "con quote di esportazione che coprono fino al 50% del loro fatturato complessivo". In risposta ai dazi statunitensi, la Cina ha avviato un piano di restrizioni alle esportazioni che minaccia gli equilibri economici mondiali.
Non si parla di semplici dettagli, o cose di poche conto. Le terre rare sono infatti un gruppo di 17 elementi chimici della tavola periodica (tra cui il neodimio, il lantanio, il cerio e il disprosio) sempre più essenziali per la produzione di tecnologie avanzate. Nonostante il nome, non sono particolarmente “rare” in natura, ma sono difficili da estrarre in forma pura perché si trovano in concentrazioni molto basse e spesso mischiate ad altri minerali. Questi elementi sono strategici perché indispensabili per la realizzazione di dispositivi elettronici (smartphone, computer, batterie), tecnologie green (pannelli solari, turbine eoliche), sistemi di difesa avanzati, auto elettriche e magneti ad alte prestazioni.
Di fronte a questo scenario, gli Stati Uniti e l’Unione Europea si stanno muovendo per recuperare sovranità economica e industriale. E l’Italia? Dopo quarant’anni di stop estrattivo, non può più permettersi di rimanere a guardare.
