Missile exchanges across West Asia have drawn attention to the accuracy of Iran’s recent strikes. Some analysts say Chinese satellite navigation could be playing a role. One system being discussed is China's BeiDou Navigation Satellite System, an alternative to the US Global Positioning System (GPS). China expanded the system in 2020, decades after beginning the project following concerns during the 1996 Taiwan Strait crisis. Satellite guidance can improve missile accuracy by correcting navigation errors in flight. Iran has not confirmed using BeiDou and says it does not rely on a single technology source. Iran and China expanded strategic cooperation in 2021, while Iran also acquired China’s HQ-9B air defence system in 2025.
