Lukaszuk backpedals after petition hits signature threshold

Former Alberta cabinet minister Thomas Lukaszuk is facing backlash after submitting a petition for a referendum to Elections Alberta, and then denying he ever wanted a referendum. Alberta separatists held a major rally at the legislature in support of independence. Alberta NDP Leader Naheed Nenshi called Premier Danielle Smith’s proposed pipelines a “pipe dream.” And unions are threatening a province-wide general strike after teachers were forced back to work under the Back to School Act.
