The court's decision spares election officials having to change their ballot rules just a few months before the 2026 midterm congressional elections. The U.S. Postal Service may not deliver mail-in ballots to states that refuse to release detailed voter lists to the Trump administration. According to Reuters, U.S. Postmaster General David Steiner confirmed the proposal at a Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee hearing last week. The proposal would require states to release to the Postal Service the names and barcodes tied to their mail-in ballots for federal elections, according to Reuters. It would also require states to provide unique barcodes on the outbound and return ballot envelopes.
