Why does some of the most advanced technology we own make us feel terrible?
OLED screens can strain your eyes. 3D movies give people headaches. VR can make you nauseous. Noise-cancelling headphones can create that weird pressure feeling in your head. And now we’re putting augmented reality directly onto car windshields.
In this episode, Caya goes down the rabbit hole of why the closer technology gets to simulating reality, the more our bodies sometimes seem to reject it.
We break down how OLED screens use PWM to control brightness, why 3D and VR create a conflict between what your eyes see and what they’re actually focusing on, how active noise cancellation tricks your perception of the world around you, and why AR displays could introduce a whole new set of problems when they make their way into cars.
And weirdly, one of the best examples of technology that gets this right might be one of the simplest: the Kindle.
Maybe the problem isn't that our bodies haven't caught up with technology. Maybe technology hasn't quite caught up with our bodies yet.
