Economic Benefits in Worker-Owned Firms

What does the research actually show about worker-owned firms?
In this panel from Day 2 of the TOP25 Worker Ownership Conference, three researchers share evidence on the economic benefits of worker ownership across cooperatives, ESOPs, and community-based enterprises:

• Olga Prushinskaya (Democracy at Work Institute) presents 10 years of data on worker cooperatives. From wages and retention to pandemic resilience.
• Fidan Kurtulus (UMass Amherst) brings empirical findings on employee ownership and firm performance.
• Thad Williamson (University of Richmond) connects worker ownership to community wealth building.

What the data shows:
• Workers at co-ops earn higher wages, stay longer (avg. 6 years vs. under 4 at conventional firms), and report much higher job satisfaction
• Co-ops proved more resilient during COVID: many teams chose shared pay cuts rather than laying off coworkers
• The majority of worker cooperative members are BIPOC women
• Worker ownership creates measurable benefits for firms, workers, and communities

Highlights:
• 7:08 Olga Prushinskaya: A decade of data on worker cooperatives
• 9:38 Finding 1: Worker co-ops are a growing sector
• 11:01 Finding 2: Tangible material benefits for workers
• 13:50 Finding 3: Better working conditions and firm resilience
• 15:38 Finding 4: Pandemic response and adaptability
