Luciano Pavarotti (12 October 1935 – 6 September 2007) was the Italian tenor who brought opera to the world, crossing into popular music and becoming one of the most successful and beloved voices of the 20th century. This video celebrates the 90th anniversary of his birth with audio from his historic open-air recital at the Champ de Mars in Paris on 2 September 1993. A crowd of 70,000 gathered at the foot of the Eiffel Tower to hear Pavarotti in a program of his signature arias, interspersed with overtures and orchestral arrangements. From the emotional climax of Puccini’s “Nessun dorma” (Vincerò) to Verdi’s “Quando le sere al placido,” the recital salutes the pinnacles of opera and Pavarotti’s Italian roots.
