Trump signs new executive orders to limit birthright citizenship

US President Donald Trump has signed two executive orders seeking to limit birthright citizenship in the United States as part of his broader immigration crackdown. The measures expand the categories of people whose children could be denied automatic US citizenship, while also targeting so-called "birth tourism" by directing the secretaries of state and homeland security to tighten procedures against travellers seeking to give birth in the US. The new restrictions also cover children born to people classified as "alien enemies" or members of designated terrorist groups. The measures are far narrower than Trump's January 2025 attempt to end birthright citizenship, which the Supreme Court rejected in June, citing more than 160 years of legal precedent. Trump called the ruling "very unfair," saying birthright citizenship had become "a joke" and that his administration was "ending it a different way." The executive orders are expected to face fresh legal challenges.
