Why the Next 2 Years are Critical for AI Safety
AI is advancing faster than the systems designed to keep it under control, and some of the people responsible for AI safety are already leaving the room. This video explores why the next two years could be critical for artificial intelligence. Major AI companies have dismantled or reorganized prominent safety teams while racing to build increasingly capable models, autonomous agents, and eventually AGI. Researchers are already documenting disturbing behaviors in frontier AI systems. In controlled experiments, models have used deception, blackmail, and rule-breaking to achieve their objectives. Other incidents have raised concerns about AI agents exploiting vulnerabilities, ignoring operator instructions, and finding unexpected ways to complete assigned goals. The danger doesn’t require AI to become conscious or “evil.” A powerful system only needs a goal, access to real-world tools, and safeguards that aren’t strong enough to stop it.
For now, humans still control most critical infrastructure, financial networks, healthcare systems, transportation, and military decision-making, but as autonomous AI becomes embedded deeper into those systems, reversing course could become dramatically harder.
The next 24 months may determine whether AI remains a tool controlled by humans, or whether society gives increasingly autonomous systems too much power before the safeguards are ready.
