NBA Refs Don Inside-Out Jerseys in Protest (2004)
February 27, 2004 - Following an announcement that official Michael Henderson would be suspended for three games after an incorrect call toward the tail end of a regular season game between the Los Angeles Lakers and Denver Nuggets, NBA officials league-wide protested the disciplinary action by wearing their jerseys inside out and wearing Henderson's No. 62.The play in question came with the Nuggets nursing a two-point lead with under 30 seconds left against the eventual Western Conference champion Los Angeles Lakers. With the shot clock winding down, an Andre Miller jumpshot ricocheted off the rim into the hands of Carmelo Anthony. Instead of resetting the shot clock to 24, Henderson whistled a shot clock violation. After a brief discussion amongst officials, the call was rescinded and swapped out for a jump ball. After the Lakers won the tip, Kareem Rush proceeded to connect on a game-winning three-pointer to steal victory out of the hands of the Nuggets.
It marked the first time in NBA history an official had been suspended for their on-court whistle.
