Suecia se ha convertido en el primer país de la Unión Europea en bajar del 5% de fumadores, 17 años antes del objetivo que Bruselas se había marcado para 2040. En los años 80 fumaba el 35% de sus adultos, una cifra muy parecida a la de España. Hoy los fumadores diarios suecos son apenas un 3,7%, mientras que en España todavía fuma uno de cada cuatro adultos.En este vídeo analizamos cómo lo ha conseguido. Suecia aplicó el mismo manual antitabaco que el resto de países, con impuestos altos, prohibiciones y advertencias, pero le añadió la reducción de daños. Ofreció a los fumadores alternativas sin combustión, como el snus, las bolsitas de nicotina o los vapeadores, y las hizo accesibles, apetecibles y más baratas que el cigarrillo. República Checa, Grecia, Reino Unido y Japón han logrado caídas muy rápidas siguiendo una lógica parecida.
Sin embargo, la Comisión Europea va en la dirección contraria. Su evaluación de la legislación del tabaco apenas menciona la reducción de daños, recibió un dictamen negativo de su propio comité de control y dejó de lado la consulta pública y las peticiones del Parlamento Europeo. Ahora Bruselas estudia prohibir los sabores, vetar las bolsitas de nicotina y tratar a los vapeadores igual que a los cigarrillos. ¿Por qué se empeña la Comisión en frenar la fórmula del único país que ha llegado a la meta?
