Do Bengali Women Really Do Kaala Jaadu?“Bengali ladkiyon se bachke rehna.” Most of us have heard it as a harmless joke. But the “kaala jaadu” stereotype was never really about Bengali women. It is about who gets blamed when a man walks away.
And the joke has consequences. Women get called witches and gold diggers online, put on trial in prime time debates, and in some places beaten or killed after being branded a dayan.
We go back 150 years to colonial Calcutta, where men from Bihar and UP worked the jute mills far from home. When many never returned, the village found it easier to blame a “Bangalan” than the husband. Add Bengal’s tantric image, Maa Kali and a generation of educated, outspoken women, and the myth had everything it needed.
At the same time, this is not unique to Bengal. Europe had witch trials, Greece had the “wandering uterus”, Bharat still has dayan hunts. This is not about Bengal. It is about a mindset that cannot digest a free woman.
My wife, who is Bengali herself, shares what this stereotype has felt like up close.
