How this therapy could reduce depression relapse | Claudi Bokting | TEDxTheHague

Depression is a common mental health condition that is accompanied not only by a lot of personal suffering, but also by social or interpersonal problems. Research has shown that people who have recovered from an episode of depression frequently experience relapse. In this talk answers to the following questions will be discussed: What are the mechanisms that explain this high risk of relapse? Do we develop psychological scars when we experience a depressive episode? What factors put us at risk for relapse? How to disrupt the recurrent rhythm of depression? Psychological interventions (Preventive Cognitive Therapy; PCT) have been developed, specifically tailored to meet the needs of individuals who are in partial remission or those fully remitted. The interventions target risk factors for relapse including stress sensitivity, dysfunctional (cognitive) beliefs, and positive emotion regulation. The use of imagery and phantasy will be discussed as well as the scientific evidence for long term preventive effects up to 20 years.

Claudi Bockting is a Professor of Clinical Psychology in Psychiatry at AmsterdamUMC at the University of Amsterdam, The Netherlands, and co-founder/director of the Centre for Urban Mental Health. She is developer of Preventive Cognitive Therapy (PCT), an effective psychological intervention that reduces relapse risk in depression. She wrote Preventive Cognitive Therapy for Depression: An evidence based approach to reduce relapse risk in 2025 with Guilford Press. Her research focuses on finding potentially modifiable factors that can be targeted with innovative interventions to prevent or treat depression, anxiety, and suicidality. She is a author of more than 200 peer-reviewed publications in journals such as Nature, JAMA Psychiatry, and Lancet Psychiatry.
She is the recipient of an honorary doctorate from the University of Basel, and fellowships at the Beck Institute (USA), and the World Health Organization. She is an elected membership in the European Academy of Sciences and Arts.
