El clímax de la tensión ocurrió en Maracanda donde, en un arrebato de embriaguez y furia, Alejandro asesinó a su amigo y salvador, Clito el Negro. El acto reveló la faceta tiránica del conquistador, dejando un rastro de remordimiento y un ejército profundamente desconfiado antes de la marcha final hacia la India.
