Durante el enamoramiento, determinadas zonas del cerebro se reorganizan para centrar toda nuestra atención en una sola persona. Se activan con intensidad las rutas del placer, asociando su presencia a bienestar y su ausencia a sufrimiento. Al mismo tiempo, la corteza prefrontal reduce su actividad, lo que explica ese pensamiento obsesivo, la impulsividad y la sensación de “atontamiento” que caracterizan al amor romántico.
