In this video, Matthew King plays a piano piece called 'The Arrival of the Black Swans' by Richard Wagner. It was composed in 1861 in Paris, while staying at the Hôtel Beauharnais after the failure of the Paris production of Tannhäuser, for which Wagner had composed a new ballet score. Matthew explains the reasons for the disaster, and also why, even in his piano music, Wagner's genius is deeply potent and personal. 1861 was also the year when Charles Baudelaire sent Wagner an extraordinary and wonderful fan letter, and Matthew reads excerpts from it.
This video was released on Wagner's 213th birthday, and a week before Matthew King's chamber-orchestration of Parsifal was performed in Inverness.
